You are a few years late to debate this...

But to discuss it very quickly , the non-romance between Satoru & Kayo felt a little bit unnatural.
In the series , Satoru wants to save her because he feel guilty to have been a powerless child that did not even try to help her a little , but that's "all".
Adding a touch of romantism on top could have made the series a little bit more emotionnal , with a more rewarding ending for Satoru.
In the end , he's still fulfilled , and there is even a romance teased with Airi , but it doesn't seems to flow with the rest of the series.

Edit : I'll add that the series also empathise way too much on Kayo , when she's not the only victim. It made viewers/readers expect more than just "He saved her. The End.".

Ah no, he wants to help her because her death is related to his mothers death in the future, so he thougt that if he can save her, he can save his mother

Yes , but no , you missed what the series was about...

Yes , he wants to save his mother , and helping Kayo can helps him to prevents this event.
But no , his goal isn't "only" that , he wants to get rid of the guilt he feel since he's a kid ; a guilt so suffocating that he forced himself to forget it , but still unconsciously distance himself from peoples and thus have a shitty life.
It's all the point of the series , he wants to save himself in reality , and that's why he even got his power to begin with. (That's also why at the end you see him starting a career of Mangaka , he's finally free of everything.)

I think that the joy came from seeing their threads that were snapped reconnect. So the fact that she ended up with Hiromi was perfect because their futures got to continue together.

The driving force of the manga wasn’t romance, but the fact that the MC’s life had come to a standstill due to this event that he fixated on. So the release wasn’t romantic, it was his future finally connecting.

I agree that this is not romance centered yet some people thought so because the guy was trying to help the girl no matter the circumstances and even going out of his way. There were some hints of romance too yet in the end no one thought that

In my opinion, the ending was not very satisfactory.
Remember what Master Oogway told us:

If the plot wasn't exactly the same as Butterfly Effect and the romance was better this would be a solid 10. But it's still very good imo

⚠️CONTAINS SPOILERS⚠️
It was suprising for me too, that they didn't ended up together but I didn't mind it that much, and now that I am thinking about it, it was pretty realistic (ik the anime is about time travel so I mean the ending is being realistic not the anime).

I think he really did all that for his mother in the first place, then he get to know the girl better and tried to save her too. But they were kids and nothing romantic happened between them, they just became good friends. He also saw/knew what horrible things happened to her, so he was empathetic and he knew he can help her. He didn't knew much about the other victims as far as I know (I saw it when it was simulcasted so I don't remember the details now).

Years passed by and they didn't even knew if the MC will wake up from his coma... I don't think the people who is mad and hate the series just because of this ending would wait for somebody 10+ years, while they don't even know if that somebody would ever wake up. Or imagine waiting for somebody and then they friendzone you💀(joking)
And again, they were kids at that time... I believe in love and all, but I wouldn't consider my childhood crushes as somebody I loved, now that I am an adult.
Also, people change... Probably a lot of things happened during that time he was in coma, it's not that suprising that the others moved on with their lives meanwhile.

I'd say a big reason that he felt more guilt over her death then the others is that he felt like he could've actually done something about it even as a child the first time around, while with the other two he didn't

Yes it is not romance and that's why I didn't judge this show on the basis of it's romance factor either

However the romance between Kayo & Satoro was hinted multiple times and that's why when they didn't end up together even after all those teases, it makes you feel like being betrayed and appalled at the same time which is already enough to lose its emotional attachment to a most of the audience, even the fanbase of this series would agree to this point

This is not only about "a girl he helped didn't fall in love with him", but it was about all the efforts Sato put to improve her life and this was certainly something which she couldn't have expected to get from anyone at that time and that's why it felt really unnatural when she didn't end up with him even when it was clearly hinted that she started to care deeply about him

And that's why no matter what people till this date can't accept that revelation and even to me that was really sad NGL

Erased would have been a 10/10 show if the romance was actually confirmed and the writer wouldn't have given us some of the clues earlier that the teacher will be killer! Just an opinion

Some of the people here really want a 30 year old to have a romance with a 10 year old. You guys got to remember that Satoru wasn't a kid in the show, he only had the body of one. Besides, this isn't a romance anime. There's problems with this show, but none of them are "oh the guy doesn't get laid with the little girl". Same old stupid debate of "a guy and girl can't be friends".

No, there were no hints of romance at all. They are children mind you. Actually, only one of them is, the other one is a 30 year old. So either you are a pervert for wanting them to have a romance or you just didn't understand what the show was about. Satoru wasn't going out of his way to save her because he had a romantic interest in her. He did it out of an obligation to his past self, the one filled with guilt. Saving her would eventually save his mother too. That's why he did what he did.

On a side note, Kayo and Hiromi getting married and having a baby makes absolute sense. Both of them are not supposed to exist as per the original timeline. As a consequence, they are sort of "mistakes" in the ending timeline, hence they are bound to end up together. If they were to get together with someone else, it wouldn't align with the original world.

I agree with the the above comment but if you want to consider this a romantic anime I think it would not be his past but his present. The girl he accidentally introduced to his mother prior to her murder. She is also the one who gives him a place to stay when the cops are looking for him and the one he rushes into a burning building to save. She is also the photographer (girl) that he meets at the end of the series and the butterflies flutter past the camera. This I think was done to signify that even if you were to make a small change to your pas, and if fate dictates that your supposed to be involved with someone then time will correct itself and present you with an opportunity to finally meet.

Yeah that makes sense. If I remember correctly, Satoru's mom even wanted Airi and Satoru to get together. But the only thing that everyone talks about here is Satoru and Kayo's romance, which was non-existent to begin with. Tbh, even Satoru and Airi don't have that much of a romance, it's not a main focus. It's a little plot device set up in the beginning that has a payoff all the way at the end.

all I have to say is; I feel like if the girl had waited for brodie and got with him and there was actual romance, then people would have complained it was a bad romance and didn’t make sense. “They didn’t have that much chemistry it’s forced! Weird that she waited that long for him despite barely any emotion!” and IMO it would have detracted from the cool story that was being presented. I personally like how it played out, homie got a cool job and the pizza girl (iirc in the new timeline they were both adults when they met again) and his old childhood friends are happy. Mom’s alive, killer caught, we win.

Read the manga bro there it is not even unnatural how kayo ended up with another guy. In the manga when satoru was in a coma then kayo waited for him but then she thought that satoru gave her a new life and that she should live it fully even for the sake of satoru. So she decided to marry the other guy and lived a happy life. It's just that their romance was tragic but at the end atleast we got a brief scene involved satoru and airi.

IDK WHO TOLD YOU THAT THIS WAS A ROMANCE ANIME

I never understood why people confused on why people hate that revelation and claims that we just want them together. Here are the reasons

1. We all knew what was the point of saving kayo. It was for her to have better life and be happy and that was clear motivation from Satoru

2. We all knew she wouldnt wait satoru to wake up from the coma and be with him. Narrative wise, it wouldnt make sense and i feel it will be cute that kayo and his mom was the one helping him out while he was coma. Because that would be a sort gratitiude towards satoru for saveing her life.

3. WE didnt like the fact that HIROMI is the husband. This makes no sense and feels a bit disrespectful towards satoru the fact that HIROMI didnt even try to tell satoru about their relationship. You gotta understand this, hiromi knew the relationship between these two so why would he suddenly just disregard that? i feel like kenya and the rest will be against that.

Look, if it was a random guy, i think people would be fine or if she couldve just not said the husband's name, people would be fine. So, people get that right u turds lol

at the beginning of the anime (to someone who didn't read anything related to the anime) could have the impression of some kind of romance with the two ""main characters"" like me tbh, but i knew that something like a romantic relationship would not be possible
